Funny Gadgets

When I was 14 years old I had a walkman for the 45 minute walk to school every day, but now I see people with iPods stuffed in their ears whilst doing their grocery shopping, just nipping to the post office and even standing talking to their friends. (Someone explain that last one to me?) My only guess is that because some of these things cost a few hundred quid that people are determined to get the use out of them before they have to ... well, 'choose' to replace it six months later. Surely they spend the better part of their lives managing their MP3 files? No wonder even today's one-hit wonders in the charts can afford fifteen Ferraris off the back of one single! If you can't live without music blaring in your ears every second, if you can't stand the sound of your own thoughts, or if you just have an anti-social streak then here are the top retailers in the UK for these machines:

This has to be the worst affected area when it comes to the fast moving technology problem. Just like computers, digital cameras and even mobile phones to a lesser extent, no sooner have you bought your MP3 player than a newer, faster, improved and better looking version comes out. I'm always fascinated with gadgets of any kind - I have a wireless stereo system round my entire house, four laptops, two desktops, two digital camcorders, three digital cameras and even a robotic vacuum cleaner (they're fantastic!) - but I do not own a personal MP3 player. I have a stereo at home, I have one in my car, life isn't a movie so why do MP3 player addicts need background music to every little task they do? I love the sound of my lawnmower, I love the sound of the city whilst I shop, I love the ridiculous chatter on the train on long journeys - what is wrong with you people? †
